Even I would have been scared of the first Santa! Where was the smile? My own theory about kids having an aversion to Santa is this - kids do not like phonies. People with weird faces like clowns, santa, or those with too much makeup raise doubts about what is underneath. Kids seem to have a low toerance for faces out of the normal range. A little fear of strangers is not a bad thing these days. Enjoy Christmas with a 2-year-old.
